Hello everyone.
Thank you for using the "Super Thin Belly Warmer" from Nara lifestyle brand "Nara Maki."
Monday, September 19th (national holiday) is Respect for the Aged Day.
Until now, Respect for the Aged Day was celebrated on September 15th , but in 2003 it was changed to the third Monday of September , and this year it will be celebrated on September 19th .
It's next Monday. Do you have any events coming up?
In today's column I will write about Respect for the Aged Day.
What is Respect for the Aged Day anyway?
Respect for the Aged Day is a day to show respect for the elderly who have contributed to society for many years and to celebrate their longevity.
Respect for the Aged Day was originally named "Older People's Day" when it was established in 1954 , but in 1964 it was renamed "Respect for the Aged Day" in order to find a better name.
The origin of September 15th is said to be the day in 593 when Prince Shotoku established "Hidain," a relief facility for the elderly and sick who had no relatives, or that a Respect for the Aged day event was held on September 15th during the farming off-season in reference to the legend of "Yoro Falls." However, there are various theories.
<Is there a Respect for the Aged Day overseas?>
I remember reading in one of my books that Japan is the only country that has Respect for the Aged Day. Does Respect for the Aged Day actually exist in other countries? I was curious and did some research, and found that there is a day similar to Respect for the Aged Day.
Here we will briefly introduce you to Respect for the Aged Day and its customs in each country.
America
Although it is not an official holiday, there is National Grandparents Day on the second Sunday of September every year. It is a day to express gratitude to grandparents and the elderly, and people give them greeting cards and flowers. The standard flower for this occasion is the Forget-Me-Not, which means "don't forget me."
Italy
There are days like Respect for the Aged Day twice a year.
The first is not an official holiday, but it is a commemorative day unique to Italy , where there are many Catholics, that commemorates two saints, Joachim, the father of the Virgin Mary, and Anna, the mother of the Virgin Mary, on July 26. The second is "Grandparents' Day," which is legally set on October 2 .
China
On September 9th , there is the Double Ninth Festival, a day to respect the elderly.
In the Yin-Yang philosophy, odd numbers are considered "Yang," and the Double Ninth Day falls on September 9th , when the number " 9 " is the most Yang. Originally, it was considered unlucky because the Yang energy was too strong, but over time, people changed their views and it became an auspicious day.
Korea
In Korea, Respect for the Aged Day is designated as "Elderly Day" on October 2nd , but since Confucian teachings are deeply rooted in Korea and there is a strong belief that "it is natural to respect the elderly," there are no special customs observed on this day.
-------------------------------
We only picked four countries, but it seems that there are no other countries that designate Respect for the Aged Day as a public holiday like Japan, so we would like to use the time off to celebrate longevity in style.
However, if you want to meet the person you want to express your gratitude to but can't meet them because they live far away...or you can't celebrate...for those of you who feel this way, let us recommend "Nara Maki" as a gift for Respect for the Aged Day.
On this site, the official Maki website, as well as on the other "Socks Factory Direct Flight Ashiya" Rakuten and Yahoo sites, we offer "Respect for the Aged Day gift wrapping".
